The Jardin d’Europe project comprises
professional development activities, research, production and
distribution, and is intended to spread over a period of 5 years,
starting 2008.
Between the 8th and the 14th of Octobre
2009, as part of Jardin d’Europe, several artists were invited to
Bucharest: Bojana Cvejic, Jennifer Lacey, Jan Kopp, Jan Ritsema and
Valentina de Piante Niculae. They took part in a week-long seminar
entitled Teaching the Teachers. With their diverse backgrounds –
dramaturgy, dance, theatre and visual arts – they analysed
different methods from the field of contemporary education in dance
and put forth proposals for possible new formulas that could meet the
needs of these artists: self-education, consultant-teachers,
informa-tion-centre-universities.
Teaching the Teachers (TTT) is an
initiative of the Jardin d’Europe network, aimed at providing the
necessary frame for starting active debates regarding new teaching
methods, training systems and creativity in the field of contemporary
dance.
Young Romanian choreographers also had
an active participation in the meetings and discussions of the TTT.
Numerous performances and creative methods were viewed, analysed and
reviewed. Just like foreign dance schools or centres (P.A.R.T.S.,
PAF, CCN Montpellier, etc.) propose new methods and explore new, more
contemporary, avenues in research/teaching, Romanian artists are also
showing an interest towards self-education, despite the fact that
information is sometimes slow to reach them and that the
responsibility they are taking upon themselves is often doubted.
The talks of these last few days
focused on the ideal school, or what courses a dancer/choreographer
should take, and several models were presented, some better suited
than others... What is crucial though, is the actual coming together
of these artists from different generations, with their rich
experience or their neophyte stance, and the confrontation of their
opinions, all stemming from a common desire to transform the
contemporary dance scene. The five artists who coordinated the TTT
meetings were invited to Bucharest so that they could share their
conclusions, ideas and vision on contemporary dance today with the
international community. Thus, we have tried to provide a certain
moment of reflection to all those involved in dance, be they
teachers, choreographers, dancers, students, managers, financial
supporters, or directors of universities or dance centres. Bucharest
has once again proven to be a fertile ground for new ideas, as all of
those invited took note of the unexpected potential of the place. All
that we can do now is hope that the ideas put forth are going to
become established in the near future. It all depends on how much we
really want them to.
